MEDICINE (MD)

UCSI University’s Medicine programme recruits and trains students to become medical doctors to meet the needs of the healthcare system of the country. This goal is achieved with highly qualified staff, fully-equipped laboratories as well as other essential facilities. With learning as its training thrust, active student participation is the standard expectation.
At the end of the MD programme, the graduates would have attained the fundamental knowledge, attitude and skills in the following five areas:
• Basic medical services
• Clinical and therapeutic methods, procedures and investigations
• Community health and family medicine • Communication skills
• Professional competence
Features of the MD Programme
i. Student-centred Learning
With a student-centred rather than teacher-centred programme, the curriculum is structured to foster and encourage student learning and the fostering of ownership over their own learning as the main objective.
ii. Problem-based Learning (PBL)
The Faculty recognises that the philosophy of using problems is the most effective learning approach suited to medicine, and is used to enhance the learning in Basic Medical Sciences.
iii. Integrated Learning
Both Basic Sciences and Clinical Sciences are integrated throughout the academic training with early clinical exposure in the form of hospital visits to enhance the learning of Basic Sciences and to facilitate student transition to a comprehensive hospital & Community-based learning that enables students to develop their interviewing, communication and physical examination skills. Arranged in Year 2 of the programme, these visits enable students to put their training into practice, as well as to facilitate their transition into the clinical environment in Year 3.
iv. Computer-assisted Learning
The learning process is further strengthened with active incorporation of multimedia tools, which include a computer- ised multi-purpose laboratory and 3D cyber anatomy software for anatomy dissection sessions.

MBBS in UTAR

Applicants must have STPM with minimum Grade B in Biology, Chemistry and Physics / Mathematics or A-Levels with minimum Grade B in Biology, Chemistry and Physics / Mathematics or South Australian Matriculation (SAM) with minimum score 14 in 3 Science subjects / Mathematics or Canadian Pre-University (CPU) with an average of 80% in 6 relevant subjects or Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) with Grade B4 in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathemetics and Advanced Mathematics or Foundation in Science, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) or Foundation from other Institutions of Higher Learning in the relevant field or Matriculation Certificate, Ministry of Education or Diploma in Science, Kolej Tunku Abdul Rahman (KTAR) in the relevant field or diploma in Science from other institutions of higher learning in the relevant field or other equivalent qualifications recognised by the Malaysian government. International students must have SPM/ SPMV English Language as Grade C, They should have a International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Score of Grade 6.0, Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) Score of 550, English 1119 / O-Level as C6, UEC Bahasa Inggeris as Grade B and Malaysian University English Test (MUET) should be Band 4.

Medic in SEGI University

Considered as one of the most in-demand and glamorous of faculties in the whole of SEGi University College, the Faculty of Medicine offers the popular MBBS or Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery Course within this faculty. As opposed to other universities or colleges, dentistry and pharmacy courses do not fall within the same faculty, instead both courses have their own faculties for better management of these courses within SEGi. The Faculty of Dentistry manages courses such as the Bachelor of Dental Surgery, the Certification for Dental Surgery Assistants and well as the Foundation in Science, while the Faculty of Pharmacy and Applied Health Sciences facilitate courses such as Master of Pharmacy, Foundation in Science, Diploma in Pharmacy and also the Bachelor in Pharmacy. Let us nevertheless concentrate on the Faculty of Medicine as well as the MBBS course that is offers at its flagship Kota Damansara campus.

The awarding institution for the MBBS would be SEGi University College, and the course would take a minimum of five years to complete. The MBBS course will take five years to complete, and has been broken into three different phases, Phase One, Phase Two and Phase Three. SEGi emphasizes on early patient contact, thus students would be exposed to patients and clinical experience from Phase One onwards instead of later years as per expected within the usual medical course. Phase One will consume two years, and will expose students to general medical science subjects that include the likes of Pathology, Anatomy and Community Medicine. Subsequently medical students would undergo Phase Two (one year) and Phase Three (two years) before eventually graduating as a medical doctor.
