KUCHING: Students of UCSI University, Sarawak Campus were recently given the opportunity to look at the operations behind the curtains at Four Points by Sheraton Kuching. ALL EARS: Students give their full attention to some tips from chef Calistus. A press release issued yesterday said the group, consisting of new students as well as those currently undergoing their degree programme had the opportunity to personally see the operational details in the hotel industry.
Led by student affairs manager, Jenice Yeo, the students’ visit was part of UCSI University’s Orientation Week. On hand to meet the students was general manager Paolo Campillo who also gave an insightful presentation on the world of hospitality as well as his life story in the industry.
During the tour of the hotel premises, the students were divided into smaller groups that were led by staff of the hotel. They visited the many different departments in the hotel and listened as their respective group leader briefed them on the functions of each department as well as the daily tasks that the department undertook. Of particular interest to the students was the hotel’s main restaurant, aptly named ‘The Eatery’. There they met with the chefs on duty who enthusiastically explained the daily operations in the different kitchens at the restaurant.
Executive Sous-Chef, chef Yew Seng showed the students the various types of cuisine served in The Eatery and explained how the different types of food were typically prepared and served. The sneak peeks into the banquet kitchen, laundry, employee cafeteria, as well as a suite, clearly thrilled the students although they learned during the visit that working in a hotel was no easy feat. However, the visit had also opened their eyes that it was crucial to have quality services in the hospitality industry.
